Call for Submissions

Submissions: Faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, and independent scholars from anywhere in the world are invited to submit abstracts for the 2025 meeting of the South Carolina Society for Philosophy (SCSP). Proposals on any topic of philosophical interest are welcome.

The 2025 meeting will feature four different presentation formats:

  1. Papers

  2. Panels

  3. Posters (undergraduate only)

  4. Dialogues

Papers will be allotted twenty minutes for presentation with ten minutes of Q&A. Undergraduate students should plan to submit their full papers of approximately 3000 words, anonymized for review; others may submit anonymized abstracts of approximately 500 words. All papers and abstracts should include a title along with several keywords or categories into which the paper could fit on the program, if accepted.

Panels are pre-organized sets of  three to five papers on a theme or topic. Each panel will be allotted ninety minutes, though the format is largely up to the panel organizer.  For example, panels may include a round table discussion. A panel proposal should include an anonymized overview of the topic along with anonymized abstracts of approximately 300 words for each of the papers to be presented. Don't hesitate to reach out with questions!

Posters which will be displayed throughout the conference, are aimed at showcasing research from undergraduates in and around South Carolina. There will be designated poster presentation session, where authors will get a chance to present their work to other conference attendees. We will award a prize to the best poster, determined by a vote from all attendees. A poster proposal requires an anonymized abstract of approximately 300 words.

Dialogues, an experimental format for the 2025 conference, are pre-organized unscripted discussions of a particular issue about which the discussants disagree. Each dialogue will take place over twenty minutes, followed by ten minutes of Q&A. Each discussant will prepare two questions to pose to their interlocuter. After each question, a five-minute discussion between the two participants will take place. A moderator will ensure that each question is asked within the allotted time. Our plan is to accept only a small number of dialogue proposals. Each dialogue proposal should include an anonymized abstract of approximately 300 words on the topic of discussion, along with the four questions that will be discussed.

All submissions for the SCSP should be emailed to the SCSP at SCSPhilosophy@gmail.com by January 15, 2025 and should indicate the presentation category include a title and a few possible categories into which the paper could fit on the program if accepted. In the body of your email, please indicate your name, institutional affiliation (if any), status (e.g., faculty, graduate student, etc.), contact information, and whether you wish your paper to be considered for a Society prize (see below).

Location: The meeting will be held on the Columbia campus of the University of South Carolina which is served regionally by the Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE). Additional information about lodging options near the conference venue will be communicated closer to the conference date.

Underrepresented Voices in Philosophy: The Society particularly encourages submissions from participants whose work or presence in the profession centers on historically underrepresented questions, themes, issues, figures, or methods of inquiry.

Prizes: The coveted Boiled Peanut trophy will be awarded, along with a cash prize, to the best poster from an undergraduate at an SC institution, the best paper from a graduate student (from any institution), and the best paper from a non-tenured faculty member at a SC institution. Authors wishing to be considered for one of these prizes should indicate this in their submission email (see above). Faculty, independent scholars, and graduate students wishing to be considered for a prize should plan to submit an anonymized version of their full paper of approximately 3000 words to the SCSP (SCSPhilosophy@gmail.com) by February 15, 2025 (in addition to submitting an abstract by January 15, 2025).

More Information: Additional queries about any aspect of the meeting can be directed to the SCSP leadership team at SCSPhilosophy@gmail.com .
